El 1258 is an event organised by the Horos association in collaboration with the Objectif D+ association, affiliated with the French Hiking Federation, as well as several municipalities involved in the project.
Horos is an association created in 2022 by a group of history and hiking enthusiasts interested in the border route established by the Treaty of Corbeil in 1258 between France and Catalonia. Our goal is to promote the historical and cultural heritage of this area through hikes, tours, conferences and publications.
Captivated by the beauty of the landscapes, the wealth of historical remains and the discovery of boundary stones, we decided to create an association to promote and protect this little-known route.
A horos, in ancient Greek ǒpoҁ, is a stone boundary marker used in ancient Greece to mark property lines. The northern Catalan countries have the remarkable distinction of being located between two borders: that of the Treaty of Corbeil, which in 1258 established the boundaries between France and Catalonia along the Corbières line… known at the time as the Pyrenees! and that of the Treaty of the Pyrenees of 1659, still in force today, which moved France southwards… to our Pyrenees!
Objectif D+ is an association affiliated with the French Hiking Federation based in Puyvalador, where hiking, fast hiking and trail running are practised. With the support of the French Hiking Federation, the association is responsible for managing and directing the El 1258 events.
Finally, the event would not be possible without the municipalities directly involved in organising the project: Formiguères, Mosset, Bélesta, Vingrau and Salses-le-Château.
Not to mention the many other municipalities crossed, the urban communities, the Pyrénées Orientales department, the Occitanie region, the Regional Nature Parks, the National Forestry Office and all the event’s partners!
