Ultra Hiking

This is a fast hiking team event for teams of 2 or 3, female, male or mixed, covering approximately 226 km and 8,000 m of elevation gain/9,900 m of elevation loss, following the old border between Col de Puymorens and Salses-le-Château on an unmarked trail starting from Formiguères (km 42).

If a competitor in a team of 3 drops out, the 2 remaining runners may only continue after ensuring that their teammate has been taken care of at a base camp, provided they have obtained authorization from Race HQ.

If a competitor in a team of two withdraws, both competitors must stop.

The aim of the Ultra-Randonnée is to complete the course at your own pace without exceeding the time limit. It cannot be considered a competitive event and therefore does not give rise to an official ranking. The timing system is designed to establish the speed/effort (VE)** achieved by the team, excluding stops at the base camps, which allows it to be positioned in the “finisher” system of the French Hiking Federation’s fast hiking reference system, which recognizes four levels of performance: gold (VE8), silver (VE7), bronze (VE6) and finisher (time limit for the event, i.e. approximately VE4).

It is open to participants aged 21 and over (born on or before September 6, 2005). No experience or performance level is required, as participants compete in pairs or groups of three, which ensures sufficient safety conditions. The maximum number of participants for this event is capped at 180, or between 60 and 90 teams.

This event will start on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. and the race will close at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 30, 2026, giving participants a maximum of 96 hours to complete the challenge and become finishers.

*Definition of distance/effort: distance of a course in kilometers plus the elevation gain in hundreds of meters. Example: I complete a course of 15 km and 300 m of elevation gain, which gives a distance/effort of 18 kilometers/effort: 15+(300/100) =18 KE.

**Definition of speed/effort: pace in km/h equivalent on flat ground, taking into account the elevation gain. It is calculated by dividing the distance/effort by the time in hours. Example: I cover 15 km and 300 m of elevation gain in 3 hours, my speed/effort = (15+300/100) / 3 = 6 km/h effort (VE6).
